Joel & Xueting, Hugo’s adopters

“Shortly after moving into our new place, we found out we were expecting our first child. Many would then advise us against having a dog with such timing. In the event, we decided to take a leap of faith.

We met Hugo, then known as Anthony. He was this gentle boy who wouldn’t warm up to us until weeks later. What I appreciate was that the volunteers at SOSD made the extra effort to ensure Hugo was a right fit for us, and vice versa. We came by for two hours every week to spend some time with Hugo before he was brought over for a house visit. Those were little but important steps in rehoming. It was then that we knew we had to give Hugo a forever home. Now, the entire family loves him to bits and the rest is history.

To be honest, mongrels aren’t the cutest looking of all, nor are they the prettiest most times. In fact, they are always misunderstood as fierce and aggressive. It’s common to have people taking a detour just to avoid us when we’re down on walks. Hey, my wife is heavily pregnant, if she can walk Hugo like a badass, he’s gentle enough for anyone. Look beyond them, what you get is a fantastic beast that makes a hell of a companion.”
